70.3 Ecuador is on

Ironman 70.3® Ecuador will take place as scheduled, on July 31, 2016 according to the Ironman corporation.

After an earthquake shook the coast of Manabí on April 16, the event team in Ecuador performed an overall evaluation of the event venue," wrote Ironman in a statement released today.

The race will take place in Manta, in the same area as the epicenter as the April quake. Yesterday there were 2 more aftershocks, measuring 6.7 and 6.8.

"Although there is sizeable physical damage in certain areas of town and lives were sadly lost, the community has risen strong and is working together to host Ironman athletes from around the world at the event," continued Ironman in its statement.

With Ironman events around the world now numbering 90 and growing, the chances increase of weather or natural disasters disrupting its events. Forest fires, snow and floods have played havoc with Ironman races in Canada, Lake Tahoe and most recently last week's North American Ironman Championship in Texas, where floods shortened an already makeshift 112-mile bike course to 94 miles.
