Jackson, Potts win Coeur d’Alene

U.S. stars Heather Jackson and Andy Potts won Ironman 70.3 Coeur d’Alene Sunday.

Women

Jackson started her day 3:35 behind swim leader Haley Chura and 1:41 behind top rival Ellie Salthouse of Australia. After 24 miles on the bike, Jackson seized the lead and created a 3:12 gap on Salthouse and 3:56 on Chura at Mile 35. After a sizzling 2:23:24 bike split – 7:46 better than Salthouse – Jackson started the run with a 6:16 gap on Salthouse, 7:09 on Jen Annett, 8:41 on Amanda Wendorff, 11:48 on Skye Moench and 13:05 on Malindi Elmore.

Not inclined to rest on her laurels, Jackson pushed home with 4th-best 1:24:01 run to finish in 4:19:34 with an 8:10 margin of victory over Salthouse (1:25:49 run), 10:08 on 3rd-place Canadian Elmore (women’s-best 1:20:50 run) and 15:13 on Canadian Sue Huse (1:23:41 run).

Men

Potts dueled Josh Amberger of Australia nearly even on the swim (leading splits of 23:27 to 23:25). On the bike leg, Mark Bowstead of New Zealand made up the 35 seconds he lost on the swim and joined the fray thanks to a race-best 2:10:31 split that made up a minute on Potts and 42 seconds on Amberger. At T2, Amberger led Bowstead by 15 seconds and Potts by 16.

Four miles into the half marathon, Potts gapped Amberger by 20 seconds and Bowstead by 40 seconds and never looked back on his way to a race-best 1:15:56 run that brought him to the finish in 3:54:45 with a 2:04 margin of victory over Amberger (1:18:15 run) and 2:31 on 3rd-place finisher Bowstead (1:18:28 run).

Ben Hoffman made up ground with a 3rd-fastest 1:16:55 run that brought him to the finish in 4th place, 4:08 back of Bowstead and 1:38 ahead of 5th-place Luke Bell of Australia.
