Coming off a third place at Kansas Ironman 70.3, Australian Paul Matthews finished in 4:01:26 to hold off 2006 ITU Duathlon World Champion and fellow Aussie Leon Griffin by 1 minute 38 seconds to win the 2009 Buffalo Springs Lake Ironman 70.3 in Lubbock Sunday.
"I was really happy to finally crack it for a win in America. This is my 4th year racing in America and it was great
to finally get a win." said Matthews. "It was also my 2nd 70.3 win with the other win being in 2005 so it had been a long time in between drinks. It was great to do it at Buffalo Springs which is the race that I've competed in the most in the US so it was great to win there and to continue the Aussie dominance there!"
Amy Marsh beat fellow Austin triathlete Kelly Williamson by 1:28 for the win. Amy and husband Brandon Marsh tied for household honors as Amy’s win trumped Brandon’s fourth place finish and Brandon’s 4:06:53 finish time topped Amy’s 4:33:36 clocking.
