While New Zealander Kate McIlroy took a definitive win over Hayley Peirsol of the US, fellow Kiwi Callum Millward edged former US Collegiate National Champion Kevin Collington in a red-hot sprint to the finish at the Pan American Cup in Austin Texas on Memorial Day.
After mirroring one another during a 17:31 to 17:32 swim, Millward gained a 4-second advantage over Collington with a 53:23 bike. On the run, Millward matched race-best 30:30 runs with Collington to hit the line with a three-second advantage in 1:43:17.
In the women’s Pan American Cup contest, McIlroy overcame a 2-minute 14-second deficit after her 19:14 swim with a sizzling-fast 33:39 10km run to top the USA’s Hayley Peirsol by 45 seconds at the line.
McIlroy only gained back 25 seconds on Peirsol with her 4th best 1:01:07 bike, but bested her American rival on the run, 33:39 to 35:57, to hit the finish all alone in 1:56:04.
In the Olympic distance age group invitational, Derek Yorek of Austin won overall by a margin of 49 seconds in 1:58:46 and Peggy Yetman of Beaumont, Texas took the women’s overall by a margin of 5 minutes 11 seconds in 2:08:16.
