Timothy Reed of Australia and Parys Edwards of Great Britain won Ironman 70.3 Subic Bay in the Philippines Sunday.
Men
Josh Amberger of Australia led the swim in 22:18, followed a minute later by Tims Green and Reed as well as Michael Murphy and Mitch Robins, with Luke McKenzie 1:51 later. Amberger extended his lead with a race-best 2:04:12 bike split which gave him a 3:15 lead in McKenzie (next-best 2:05:44 bike leg) 3:25 on Reed (2:06:44 bike leg) and 6:54 on Robins (2:10:19 bike split).
If not for the bike leg, Reed and Robins would have had a photo finish as they essentially mirrored swim splits – 23:18 to 23:23 – and run splits – 1:18:59 to 1:18:57. While Amberger and McKenzie were faster on the bike, their 1:27:34 1:25:17 run splits left the two Aussies in 3rd and 4th places. Reed hit the finish in 3:51:59 with a 3:49 margin on Robins and 5:13 on 3rd-place Amberger, with McKenzie 1:07 further back in 4th place.
Competitors and fans were disappointed as Craig Alexander did not start due to a longstanding back injury that cropped up two days before the race.
Women
Emma Bilham of Switzerland led the women's swim in 25:17, well out in front of Belinda Granger (27:23), Beth Gerdes (27:47), Katy Duffield (27:49), Jenny Guerrero (28:09) Dimity-Lee Duke (28:26) and Parys, who was 3:19 back of the leader.
After her women’s-best 2:20:33 bike split, Edwards led Gerdes by 4:36, Duke by 5:04, Granger by 6:18 and Bilham by 6:19. After posting a women's best 1:25:31 half marathon, Edwards finished in 4:18:13 with a 5:52 margin on Gerdes (1:26:45 run) and 9:26 on 3rd-place finisher Duke.
Edwards could be additionally proud as she finished 6th overall, beaten only by the top 5 men.
