Roualt, Jenkins take Clermont Sprint

Gregory Roualt of France used a race-best 13:48 5k to outsprint the USA’s Jarrod Shoemaker by 3 seconds and Helen Jenkins of Great Britain used a tied for race-best 15:40 5k to run away by 48 seconds from the USA’s Sarah Haskins and take the elite crowns at the ITU Sprint Triathlon Pan American Cup Saturday at Clermont, Florida.

As the 750 meter-swim, 29 kilometer bike and 5k run also served as the USAT National Sprint Championship, Shoemaker and Haskins took the national titles along with second-place prize money of $3,000 each. Roualt, who finished the course in 50:28, and Jenkins, who finished in 55:05, both took home $3,750 of the $30,000 total prize purse.

The race served as the first of six events that will comprise the 2011 USA Triathlon Elite Race Series.

In the men’s race, Shoemaker made his finish line move first, but surrendered to the counter punch of Roualt, who hit the line in 50:28 with a three seconds margin over the USA champ. In somewhat of an upset, Kaleb Vanort, who won the USAT age group duathlon nationals and USAT age group triathlon nationals last year, placed third in a deep, talented field, just three seconds back of Shoemaker.

In the women’s race, 2008 ITU Olympic distance World Champion Helen Jenkins, 2008 ITU Olympic distance World Championship runner-up Sarah Haskins of the USA, USA competitors Alicia Kaye and Sara McLarty, and Flora Duffy of Bermuda made a break on the bike and arrived in T2 with a 45-seconds margin on the chase pack. On the run, Haskins and Jenkins took off first, with Jenkins pulling out for good on her way to a 15:40 run. Haskins, who fought an ankle injury for much of last year, could only manage a 16:29, which was just enough to hold off Gwen Jorgensen’s equal-best 15:40 5k for second place by a four seconds margin.
