Swail Ertel and Reed win the 2008 USAT Elite Championships new

Julie Swail Ertel and Matt Reed took the elite titles at the USA Triathlon National Championships today in Hagg Lake, Oregon.

Ertel, the USA Triathlon defending champion, 2007 Pan Am Games gold medalist, Tuscaloosa Olympic Trials winner and 2008 Olympian, took her second elite national championship by 10 seconds over 2008 ITU World Championship silver medalist Sarah Haskins.

Sarah Groff of Boulder, Colorado was 40 seconds back of Ertel in third. As she did in the Olympics and at the Hy-Vee triathlon this year, Laura Bennett took fourth place. Bennett was two minutes back of Ertel, with Chicago and Los Angeles Triathlon winner Becky Lavelle 2:30 back in 5th place.

In the men’s race, Matt Reed of Boulder, Colorado added to his Tuscaloosa Olympic Trials win, 5th place at the ITU World Championship and wins at Miami and St. Anthony’s with his second US Elite National title by 68 seconds over hard charging 38-year-old Joe Umphenour of Seattle, Washington.

Ethan Brown, the 2007 Under 23 national champion from Lowell, Massachusetts, took third and repeated his U23 title, with Matt Chrabot of Virginia Beach, Virginia 4th and Brian Fleischmann of Colorado Springs, Colorado 5th.

The Age Group race

Jason Schott, 37,of Atlanta, Georgia, took the men's 35-39 category and the overall age group title won last year by Ben Collins of
Seattle, Washington. Last year, Schott finished second to Craig Greenslit in the
USA Triathlon Nationals in the 35-39 category and was 9th overall in the 2006 USA Triathlon age group nationals in Smithville, Missouri.

Brooke Davison of Boulder, Colorado also won the 35-39 title as well as the USA Triathlon national women's overall age group crown. Earlier this year, Davison took the overall age group title at St. Anthony's, the Boulder 5430 sprint tile and the Loveland (Colorado) Lake-to-Lake overall title. She also took first overall amateur and third overall woman at the Boulder 5430 Long Course Triathlon.
