Trevor Wurtele's IHIT Cervelo S5

Canadian Trevor Wurtele raced a Cervelo S5 road bike at the 2015 Island House Invitational Triathlon and we wanted a closer look at his set up. The 3-day stage race with some draft legal sections had to be done on road bikes, and that was a simple task for the ITU athletes who race like that all the time. But some of long course athletes like Trevor Wurtele had to put their TT bikes aside and build up a road bike or convert a training bike for this very desirable $500,000 purse occasion. But UCI and ITU officials were not invited, so athletes were able to be somewhat creative. Richard Murray apparently referred to Trevor Wurtele's creativity as "gangster." But go have a look for yourself.

This 58cm Cervelo S5 with ENVE SES 8.8 wheels looks right at home at Highbourne Cay, Exuma on the Bahamas. Wurtele rides a Cobb SHC saddle and has stock Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 components.

Trevor Wurtele has a Power Tap Joule GPS display that gives him data from his Power Tap G3 hub, and yes that is a singular aero extension that Trevor zip tied to his ENVE 110mm stem.

Up close with the interesting aero bar connection. Trevor added extra bar tape for padding for his arms.

Trevor Wurtele rides 175mm Rotor 3D cranks with Rotor 53/41 QXL rings and Speedplay pedals.

25mm Continental Grand Prix 4000S II tires with lstex tubes are mated to the ENVE SES 8.9 wheels. In the back as noted earlier is a Power Tap G3 hub.

The Cervelo S5 shows signs of the 3 days of racing and a few days of preparing in this beautiful sandy place.

When asked about the unicorn aero set up, Trevor Wurtele said that he would not do it again.

"So yeah, I used this mono bar set up, which worked well on straight roads, at training efforts. But with the sidewinds, twisty roads, and full throttle racing it turned out to be pretty unstable and uncomfortable. I wouldn't use it again. Most of the time I just tried to get as low as possible using the drops," said Wurtele to slowtwitch.
