What are they riding now? popular

Written by: Herbert Krabel

Most Pros by now are settled in on their rides for the 09 season, but more news along those lines is still coming in. We are keeping a log of which Pros are using which bike in 2009.

This weekend at Ironman Brasil, Oscar Galindez will be showing off the new Merida Time Warp. This fairly unknown new bike looks quite interesting and replaced a Cervelo P3C. The 2005 Ironman Hawaii champion Faris Al-Sultan switched from a Cannondale Slice to a Storck Aero.

Just a little while back Rasmus Henning went from his short course French MBK bike to a British "long course" Boardman TT bike, winning Ironman China on it. Michael Lovato traded in his Javelin for a Kestrel Airfoil Pro and Kate Major is now on a Wilier. Prior to the Wilier, Kate was aboard an Orbea. We also just got word from one of our regular readers that 2x XTERRA World Champion Julie Dibens just switched from Planet X to Trek. She confirmed this on her website, writing about racing the recent XTERRA Guam on a Trek Top Fuel.

More to come, stay tuned.

We also link back to the slowtwitch profiles of those Pros who have added their bike fit numbers and a few pictures. You will see a hyperlink in those cases.

Changes in Pro Bike Sponsorships 4 out of 5 stars

Amazing to see how many pros are changing their rides in a given year. I'm sure this only scratches the surface. Such constant movement makes one wonder about the value of sponsorships at all. Surely the athletes are just chasing the best deals. Given that the bike is a major element of performance, the logical conclusion is that, within a considerable range, the particular bike you ride doesn't matter. The small points of differentiation from one ride to the next have limited impact on the pros' finishing times. I guess the summary is buy a good bike, train hard.

Bike swap 4 out of 5 stars

this is not a review, but rather a comment. I'd like to see the list in the order of the swap date instead of alphabetical by rider. Better yet, if you could make the list interactive so that I could sort by rider, bike manuf, or date of swap, but for a static table, listing by date of swap might be better.

Bike changes 4 out of 5 stars

In response to a couple of the points raised. The great road champion Sean Kelly summed it up well when asked what was the best bike he had ever ridden and he replied 'The one I was being paid to ride at that particular time.'
