THE COURSE

THE SWIM

It will be wetsuit swim. Plenty of rescue craft and life-savers will be available at all points. The expected (and hoped for) good weather will make it a calm, flat swim. The wind may pick up a little, causing a slight breeze across the bay. It is out-and-back, however the organizers retain the right to change the swim course in order to stay inside the bay if necessary.

The swim is clockwise, with a sea start. Swimmers enter on the left side of the beach looking toward the sea. Two large buoys mark the start line. Swim out towards the first buoy, staying on the left, turn right around the buoy toward Harbour Island. Follow the line of buoys -- keeping the buoys on the right -- turn at the large buoy at the end. Swim around the buoy heading back with the buoys on your right hand side. The large buoy shows you where you turn back to the beach, which will be on your left hand side. Exit the swim through 2 large finish buoys.

THE BIKE

No mountain bikes or disc wheels are allowed. The bike is 2 loops of 90km (56miles) each along the sea front. The furthest turning point is 45km (28 miles) away just short of Kleinmond. The other turning point is in Gordon’s Bay. The route is very scenic with the mountain range along your left and the sea on your right. Cyclists must keep left (UK-style traffic pattern)! The road is undulating for the first 25km (16miles) rising to approx. 130 meters above sea level. There are a few steep climbs and decents – see race website for route profile. The road surface is very smooth up to Betty’s Bay where the road widens out to the turn just before Kleinmond. The road will have some light traffic from local residents in the area. Aid stations will be strategically placed along the route (you may even see the odd baboon pinching banana’s from the aid station) Proceed back to Gordon’s Bay for the 2nd loop. Bike support will be available on the road to assist with basic bike mechanical problems.
The run route has been changed from last year to 2 loops of 21.1km each between Bikini Beach and the Strand. The course is fast and flat.
