2001 HAWAIIAN IRONMAN
RUN PICS

All these are from mile-6. This is the new run turnaround on Alii Driive, and as one approaches this point in the car from the other direction it is a weird feeling to be cruising down this empty road.

DeBoom passed this point in second place, 5 minutes behind. He would continue to catch Larsen, eventually reeling him in at about the 10-mile mark. That was one mile ago (as of this writing) so who knows whether he'll keep it? Stranger things have happened.

Peter Reid had a hard day at the office, and as everyone knows, Kona will do that to you. At this point he was behind DeBoom and Stadler, but ahead of Hellriegel and Cameron Brown. At this point, just after the turnaround, he was motioning to Hellriegel, just across the road from him, to come up and join him. Hellriegel obliged shortly thereafter, but Reid was just not having his day, and abandoned.

Hellriegel almost always has a solid day, and is having another one today. Wearing his now-trademark bandana, he is triathlon's il Pirata.

Cameron Brown came through just a bit later, and he's closing on Stadler. But the strong German is not ready to yield his third place. Will the Kiwi get him by the race's end? Good question. On paper, yes. But paper is meaningless in Kona.
