RACE PHOTOS

Photographers we're not. Just the same, here is where you'll find the odd snapshot of the race. Above is our best representation of the gloomy gray morning, misting, raining, and even after the sun was fully "up" cars had their headlights on.

After three or so miles of riding the cyclists finish their ascent of the Kuakini Highway, and Macca is just preparing to execute a U-turn onto the Queen K Highway, where he was greeted by a nice tailwind. Notice how wet the road is.

Chris had a good day for most of the race, because by the time you get off the bike you've done most of the race. On the run, it wasn't Aussie weather, it was Africa weather. Not THAT hot, but the water that came down in torrents for the last 18 hours, cooling the athletes and the air, came right back up in the form of steam as the clouds parted and the sun beat down. It was more than the Aussie could take.

The German man of Iron Hellriegel kept up his pace, and while not exactly threatening a run course record, loped off in the hopes of victory after passing the fading McCormack.

The surprise of the day in the men's race was Francois Chaboud. Yes, he won the world's most difficult Ironman earlier this year in the French Maritime Alps, but it's common for Frenchmen to do extremely well in their own country, only to come to earth once they cross their borders and race internationally. Chaboud proves to be the exception, at least on this day.
