San Diego WTS elite women

Just a few miles from the September 25, 1974 birth of triathlon in a modest triathlon in Mission Bay, the glamorous International Triathlon Union Elite Women competitors put on a very good show in the second round of the 2013 World Triathlon Series evenmt in San Diego.

Barbara Riveros-Diaz of Chile rounds a sharp corner in the main chase pack.

Pamela Oliveira warms up. The Brazilian got off fast with a 17:27 swim and joined a 4-woman bike breakaway that carved out a minute lead. But after the run she was 28th.

Gwen Jorgenson, Non Stanford and Anne Haug emerged from this massive pack anf finished 1st, 2nd and 4th.

After Sarah Groff faded, Emma Moffatt took over the lead.

Anne Haug ran her way toward the front, but Non Stanford had the most left for the end. Stanford pipped Emma Moffatt for 2nd, while Haug took 4th and Jodie Stimpson took 5th.

Gwen Jorgenson flew through the run for the win and posted a race-fastest 32:10 run

Sarah Groff led the swim and the bike, but didn't leave enough energy for the run and faded to 7th.

Jorgenson prevailed over some very fast runners.

Non Stanford exults in beating Emma Moffatt in a sprint to the line for the silver.
