His passion for the sport started when his dad (Eric Metzler) noticed he was a little depressed by not excelling at basketball. Some fatherly encouragement, a $300 dollar bike with down tube shifters was all Big Metz needed to get rolling. Fast forward over 17 years later, Justin has become one for the rising stars in the long distance scene. We had a chance to sit down with him just outside of Boulder, CO last week, before he went on to race IRONMAN Lake Placid. See what he has to say about his journey, what he thought was going to happen and what his advice is for age groupers.
