Slowtwitch Road Show – Austin

The Slowtwitch Road Show Tour is in the home stretch with a stop in Minneapolis-St. Paul at NOW Bikes and Fitness tomorrow and Schlegel Bikes in Oklahoma City on July 16th. But first, it was back to back weekends in Texas with stops at Bike Lane in The Woodlands followed by Austin Tri-Cyclist last weekend.

Austin Tri-Cyclist (ATC) requested to host a Road Show on Memorial Day Weekend with LifeTime Fitness’s CapTex Triathlon in town. While the Road Show event was held under sunny skies, CapTex was unfortunately stripped down to a 10k footrace due to severe storms.

ATC is a short walk from the skyline of downtown Austin, and only a few hundred yards from the dammed-off Colorado River section called Town Lake and the multi-purpose recreation trails hugging both banks.

ATC hosts a weekly hammerhead group ride with 30 and 50 mile options, dubbed the ATC World Championship, but riders of all skill levels congregate at the shop to start and reconvene afterwards for breakfast tacos.

5x IRONMAN winner, cancer survivor and Austinite Amy Marsh (in First Endurance cycling kit) joined the group ride.

Wheels down and rolling out for 30 miles to kick off the day.

With most attendees out on the group ride, vendors put final touches on booths set up inside the expo.

The Wahoo Fitness booth had popular 3-minute power tests at many of the Road Shows this season, and participants could enter Wahoo product raffles.

Longtime pro triathlete and speedy swimmer Jamie Cleveland is an Austin-based coach and works with brands including blueseventy.

Lake Plugerville Tri promoted an upcoming race on the outskirts of Austin.

Missy and Don Ruthven started ATC in 1995 and have been active participants in the Austin tri scene since then. The couple’s daughter, Taylor, joined them for the busy day.

Damon Rinard from Cannondale flew in from Connecticut headquarters for the Road Show.

Marsh shared his experiences gleaned over the years. He got his feet wet a few decades ago in IRONKIDS, raced the ITU circuit for many years, finished on multiple IRONMAN podiums, and led the pros out of the water in Kona at IRONMAN Hawaii.

Many thanks to one of our own Slowtwitchers, Rick Kent, for capturing photos from the day in Austin.
