The Olympic champion Alistair Brownlee was all smiles as he walked t the start followed by his brother and Javier Gomez.

All eyes are now focused on the start.

The action in the water was led as expected by Richard Varga.

Jarrod Shoemaker came out of the water in 18:49, which was 1:45 behind Varga, but more importantly almost 1:30 behind the main favorites. Shoemaker would not finish in London.

Although Richard Varga was first out of the water in 17:04, Aaron Royle was first on the bike.

Alistair Brownlee was driving the pace in the front group that contained 13 athletes.

American Joe Maloy had a great swim but had a slow transition that seemingly made him miss the front bunch.

There were 2 main chasing packs on the road which eventually came together.

The leading group kept the pace high, but the chasers were relentless.

Ryosuke Yamamoto's day came to an end on the bike after an 18:46 swim and a 1:33 transition.

The leaders reached transition and now the battle was on.

Jonathan Brownlee and Javier Gomez led the run in no time, but Aaron Royle was hanging tough for a while.

Mario Mola and Richard Murray were at the front of the chasing bunch.

The injured Alistair Brownlee grimaced, but continued to run.

Up front it went back and forth between Javier Gomez and Jonathan Brownlee.

Javier Gomez had opened the sprint, but Jonathan Brownlee managed to jump past him. Here however Gomez seemed to have found one more gear.

Brownlee though was hanging tough and made it a real dog fight.

As Gomez rejoiced in taking the win, the beaten Browenlee was clearly crushed.

Down for the count, but not out. 2014 will be here before too long.

The race podium also ended up being the WTS series podium.
