Da Silva, Goss win Cartagena 70.3

Paulo Maciel da Silva of Brazil edged Tim Rea of Australia and Lauren Goss of the U.S. dominated the women’s field at Ironman 70.3 Cartagena in Colombia.

Da Silva combined a 5th-fastest 24:35 swim, 2nd-best 2:07:22 bike split and 3rd-quickest 1: 20:02 half marathon to finish in 3:55:29 with a 1:38 margin of victory over Tim Rea of Australia and 3:32 over 3rd place finisher Rodrigo Acevedo Van Arcken of Colombia.

Da Silva emerged from the swim in 4th place, 4 seconds behind swim leader Kevin Collington of the U.S., finished the bike leg in 2nd place, 1:11 behind Rea, and overtook Rea at the 18 kilometer mark of the run.

Goss scored a decisive wire-to-wire victory over field of four pro women. She combined race-best splits in the swim (26:38), bike (2:23:12) and run (1:29:57) to finish in 4:22:54 with a 7:41 margin of victory over Christen Brown of the U.S. and 14:42 over 3rd place finisher Susana Guillen of Panama.

Goss led the women professionals after the swim by 57 seconds over Christen Brown, pulled away to a 3:27 lead over Brown at T2, then expanded her lead to 7:42 over Brown at the finish.
