After a 20-man pack arrived in a logjam at T2, a five man pack surged to the front at the start of the 5 kilometer run. On the first lap, Wian Sullwald of South Africa led Hemming, then Ryan Fisher of Australia, Genis Grau of Spain, and Barclay Izzard of Great Britain with Gordon Benson of Great Britain and Csongor Lehmann of Hungary trying hard to bridge the gap.

With 1 kilometer to go. Lehmann caught the front and made a break, but with 500 meters to go, Sullwald, Hemming and Fisher attacked together.

Once they reached the carpet, Hemming broke free and hit the tape one second in front of Fisher, with training partner Sullwald taking the bronze just ahead of Lehmann, Izzard and Benson.

“After a rough start to the season this feels really good,” Hemming told ITU media. “It’s really fun to be doing a sprint finish, but it’s even better with your buddies.”

Hemming was motivated by his early season troubles. “I had a chip on my shoulder from the start of the season so I just gave it all I got,” said Hemming. “I was pushing for the first quarter of the bike but realized it wasn’t really going anywhere so wanted to save it for the run.”

Hemming was quite relieved to get his season back on track after 4 DNFs, a 39th at WTS Leeds and 13th at WTS Abu Dhabi.

This World Cup round was a two day affair with half the field qualifying in three semifinal rounds on Saturday.
