Goss, McMahon prevail at Monterrey

Lauren Goss ran far away from her rivals and, save a 3 seconds deficit after the swim, Brent McMahon won wire-to-wire to take top honors at Ironman 70.3 Monterrey.

Women

Goss began her day with a 26:16 swim that put her 14 seconds behind Mayra Castaneda Castillo of Mexico, 2:45 ahead of Maria Eugenia Barrera of Mexico, 4:13 ahead of Linsey Corbin of the U.S. and 6:50 ahead of slow swimmer-strong cyclist-runner Sarah Piampiano.

Halfway through the 90 kilometer bike leg, Goss led Corbin by 3:31, Barrera by 3:46, and 4:09 on Piampiano. After a women’s 3rd-best 2:14:29 bike split, Goss arrived in T2 with a 2:06 lead on Piampiano, who posted an impressive 2:09:45 which erased most of her swim deficit and established a 2:31 advantage on Corbin and 2:54 on Barrera.

By 6km into the run, Goss was firmly in control, leading Barrera by 6:08, a slumping Piampiano by 8:02 and Corbin by 9:06. Halfway through the half marathon, Goss increased her lead to 7:24 on Barrera, 9:05 on Piampiano and 10:27 on Corbin..

After a women’s-best 1:22:24 run, Goss finished in 4:06:32 with a 9:21 margin of victory over Piampiano (1:29:55 run) and 10:03 over 3rd place Barrera. Corbin took 4th, 11:52 behind the winner.

Men

McMahon started with a 24:39 swim split that put him 3 seconds behind Joaquin Pereda, tied him with Diego Baca, 8 seconds ahead of Antonio Villardaga, 1:40 ahead of David Guete, 1:41 ahead of Francisco Serrano, and 1:46 ahead of Arturo Garza.

After 63 km of the bike leg, Serrano led McMahon by 1 second, Alan Carillo by 2:43, Garza by 2:45, Guete by 4:08 and Baca by 4:55.

After a face-best 1:59:11 bike split, Serrano hit T2 with a 2 seconds lead on McMahon, 4:31 on Guete, 4:35 on Chris Schroeder, 4:51 on Arturo Garza, 4:55 on Joaquin Pereda and 4:58 on Carillo.

In the first 3.6kms of the run, McMahon stepped on the gas and established a 1:43 lead on Serrano. Halfway through the 13.1-mile run, McMahon led Serrano by 2:30, Pereda by 6:10, Carillo by 7:45 and Guete by 7:49.

After a race-best 1:15:23 half marathon, McMahon finished in 3:43:19 with a 5:08 margin of victory over Serrano, 10:57 over 3rd place finisher Diego Baca, 11:11 over Pereda and 12:08 over 5th place Guete.
