Haskins-Kortuem, Kanute take 36th St. Anthony’s

After a race-long battle with Lindsey Jerdonek, Sarah Haskins-Kortuem prevailed on the run to extend her St. Anthony’s Triathlon record total to 8 victories. After an impressive win at Oceanside 70.3, Ben Kanute continued his 2019 hot streak with a definitive win at the 36th edition of the classic spring Olympic distance non-drafting contest in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Women

While Haskins-Kortuem has dominated this event race like no other, this year she was extended to the max in a race-long hammerfest with Lindsey Jerdonek.

Jerdonek led the field with a 20:28 swim that gave her a 3 seconds lead on Haskins-Kortuem, which she extended to 8 seconds after a better transition to the bike. After a furiously contended 40 kilometer bike leg, Haskins-Kortuem sliced her deficit to 3 seconds after a women's-best 59:38 split. After a 2 seconds faster bike-to-run transition, Haskins-Kortuem trailed Jerdonek by a single second starting the 10 kilometer run past the elegant homes on the Bay.

Haskins-Kortuem quickly passed Jerdonek and gradually drew away with a women’s-best 37:14 run that brought her to the line in 1:58:54 with a 24 seconds margin of victory over Jerdonek and 4:36 over 3rd place finisher Alicia Kaye.

Men

Kanute and Joe Maloy led the swim in equal 19:09 splits which gave them a 6 seconds advantage over Jason West, 1:15 over Jackson Laundry of Canada and 1:30 over St. Petersburg resident Nicholas Chase.

Maloy matched Kanute’s 41 seconds time in T1 so they headed out on the bike in a virtual tie, 8 seconds ahead of West.

Whereupon Kanute seized absolute control of the race with a by-far race-best 52:38 bike split – reminiscent of newly retired Cameron Dye’s two-wheel pyrotechnics. That gave the 2016 Olympian, 2017 Ironman 70.3 World championship silver medalist and $60,000 Island House winner a 2:54 lead on West and 3:15 lead on Maloy.

West was on fire on the run, but his 31:49 race-best split could only chop 1:03 from Kanute’s lead and Maloy’s 32:07 only reduced his deficit by 45 seconds. So Kanute’s 32:52 run brought him to the finish in 1:46:03 with a 1:53 margin of victory over West and 2:31 over 3rd place Maloy.
