McCormack, Wu tops at Taiwan 70.3

Aussies Chris McCormack and Michelle Wu dominated the men’s and women’s elite fields at Ironman 70.3 Taiwan Saturday.

McCormack, the two-time Ironman World Champion and 1997 ITU Olympic distance World titlist, raced head to head with Hideo Fukui on the swim (27:12 to 27:13) and bike 2:03:21 to 2:03:15) before breaking away on the run to finish in 3:54:47 with a 3:49 margin of victory over the Japanese pro.

McCormack’s 1:20:55 run was second fastest to Swedish pro Frederik Croneborg’s 1:18:37 half marathon, which propelled him to third place, 4:47 back of the winner.

Michelle Wu trailed Maki Nishiuchi by 33 seconds coming out of the swim before taking command with a women’s race-best bike and run to hit the finish line with an 4:31:55 time which was 24:22 ahead of the Japanese pro.
