Spirig, Van Looy win Israman 113

2012 Olympic Triathlon Champion Nicola Spirig of Switzerland broke the Israman 113 women’s race record and Diego Van Looy of Belgium won his third straight Israman 113 Pro Men’s crown in Eilat, Israel Friday.

Spirig won wire-to-wire with a women’s best and second--best including the men 25:08 swim split, women’s-best 2:58:17 split on the hilly bike course, and women’s-best and overall 4th-best 1:19:18 run to finish in 4:47:26 with a 36:03 margin, of victory over Katharina Grohmann of Germany and 46:07 over 3rd place finisher Hadas Mazar of Israel.

Spirig’s time was 16:32 better than the 2018 Israman 113 women's race record of 5:03:58 set by Alice Hector of Great Britain.

Van Looy overcame a 5:16 deficit to swim leader Roee Zoarets of Israel’s 24:23 split with a men’s-best 2:42:44 bike split which earned him a 1:22 lead on Erik-Simon Strijk of Netherlands. Van Looy then blasted away from all comers with a race-best 1:12:55 half marathon that brought him to the line in 4:30:33 with a 6L52 margin of victory over Strijk (1:18:52 run) and 12:07 over 3rd place finisher Zoarets.
