Wurf, Vacquera win Challenge Salou

Cameron Wurf won it on the bike and Judith Corachán Vacquera aced it with a women’s-best swim, bike and run splits to take top honors at the Challenge Salou half distance triathlon.

Wurf started the day with a 25:33 swim split that put him 2:37 behind swim leader Pablo Dapena Gonzalez of Spain, then unleashed a world-class 1:59:23 bike split that was 8 minutes faster than top rivals Gonzalez and George Goodwin of Great Britain. Wurf posted a 1:20:41 half marathon that gave back 4:32 to faster runners Goodwin and Gonzalez, but was enough to bring him the former pro cyclist and new Ironman World Championship bike split record holder to the finish in 3:45:37 with a 1:01 margin on Gonzalez and 3:46 on 3rd place finisher Goodwin.

Vacquera opened with a near front pack 26:26 swim, followed by a women’s-best 2:18:55 bike split that was 1:01 faster than her nearest rival Laura Siddall of Great Britain. Vacquera then closed with a women’s-fastest 1:26:44 half marathon to finish in 4:12:05 with a 4:21 margin on Siddall and 8:43 on 3rd place finisher Margie Santimaria of Italy.
