Cameron Wurf of Australia stormed to the lead during the bike and held off Lionel Sanders of Canada late charge on the run to take victory at IRONMAN Copenhagen.

Wurf overcame a 19th-best swim that gave him a 5:05 deficit with a race-best 4:02:19 bike split that gave him a 6:37 lead at T2. Wurf held on with a 5th-fastest 2:49:37 marathon that brought him to the finish in 7:46:06 with a 3:18 margin over Sanders (who ran an outstanding 2:43:50) and 6:04 over 3rd place Henrik Goesch of Finland.

In fast conditions that led to seven sub-eight hour finishes and nearly 20 sub-3-hour marathons, Wurf added to his strong recent record that includes a 3rd place at 2021 Ironman 70.3 Andorra, and 2019 performances that includes 1st at Cannes short course and Ironman Australia, 3rd at Challenge Roth and 5th at Ironman Hawaii.

Sanders, who has apparently gone back to coaching himself, sports an equally solid set of recent 2021 performances that include a 7:43 second place to Jan Frodeno at the Zwift Tri Battle, wins at Ironman 70.3 St. George and Ironman 70.3 Galveston, and 2nd at Challenge Miami.
