Becker, Saeger win Spirit of Racine

Written by: Timothy Carlson

Blake Becker ‘s 8th-best 21:47 swim, race-best 2:09:10 bike and 4th best 1:21:23 run added up to a 3:54:04 winning time and a 6 minute 54-second margin of victory over runner-up Jeff Paul at HFP Racing’s Spirit of Racine half-Ironman distance event in Wisconsin Sunday.

"Bike was great, except my seat fell 3" at mile 5 ... spent 45 minutes riding like I was in the circus before I could get some assistance! ... enjoyed the run on my way to first sub 4hr half," said Blake Becker to slowtwitch after the race. "Approach to training and racing is much different this year. 60% of usual volume and 5kg's heavier ... with triathlon, stronger equals better."

In a see-saw battle at Racine, Adrienne Saeger gave up 2:05 to closest rival Michelle Lanouette on the swim, took back 4:41 on the bike and gave back 2:59 on the run while prevailing by 39 seconds – 4:22:56 to 4:23:35 – on Sunday.

Great to see rising stars like Adrienne Saeger find her groove in this race. After training hard and focusing on the bike she turned in a big effort to take her first major win. After qualifying for Kona in her first year of serious triathlon racing we all knew Adrienne had a big performance in her and she proved it here. I raced against her, well in the same race anyway, at Hy-Vee and knew she didn't feel good on race day so her bounce back here was the redemption she needed. I can't wait to see her again at the Chicago Triathlon. We should all applaud the rapid growth of triathlon in the USA over the past two years. It is by brining in new athletes like Adrienne that our sport will continue to grow.
The team I am on, ATF (aka team SPAM), had a 90+ person team at the Hy-Vee triathlon and it is a true thrill to see the growth continue. Great Job!

What a bullshit race summary 1 out of 5 stars

Given all the controversy currently being discussed on the forum about the BLATANT drafting at this race. The results shouldn't include any the men or women who did not step up and race in the elite wave. It's a slap in the face to them. Either acknowledge that there were different waves, or list the top 10 elite. It should be:

Blake Becker
Mike Lavery
Adam Zucco
Jeremy Davis
Dana Riederer
Greg Thompson
Scott Bowe
Dennis Druml
Paul Wozniakowski
Patrick Chalmers

Catherine Lee
Julie Hull
Lauren Jensen
Merilee Sander
Julie McMonagle
