Matt Chrabot of the United States and Carla Moreno of Brazil won the elite titles at the PATCO Triathlon Pan American Championships in Puerto Vallarta Mexico Sunday.

Chrabot and Cuban competitor Michel Gonzalez broke away from their nearest pursuers by 90 seconds, then Chrabot’s 34:06 10k run split held off the race-best run of Leonardo Chacon of Costa Rica by 1 minute 10 seconds to take the victory in a time of 1:54:48. Chrabot bettered his 4th place finish at this championship last year, while fellow USA star Jarrod Shoemaker took third place in 1:56:02.

In the women’s race, Moreno’s race-best 36:26 run broke away from a swim-bike duel with Gwen Jorgensen of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, who lost 30 seconds on the run and fell 28 seconds back of Moreno’s 2:04:52 time at the line. Jillian Peterson of St. Louis, Missouri placed third, another 64 seconds back of Jorgenson.

In a shocking development, 2-time World Cup winner and pre-race favorite Kirsten Sweetland of Canada was disqualified after unknowingly cutting a corner on the run course.
