Growing Rev3 prize purse

In a time when many companies cut budgets and take away perks, the Rev3 group is stepping up to the plate in a different way. They announced $125,000 of additional prize money for the 3 Rev3 events.

The Rev3 series is already quite big in terms of prize money with its $300,000 purse spread out across the three featured events in Knoxville, TN, Middlebury, CT and Sandusky, OH. But now an additional $125,000 has been added to the purse for the Pro male or female who will win the Olympic distance Rev in Knoxville on May 9th, the Half Distance Rev in Middlebury on June 6th and the September 12th Full Distance Rev in Sandusky. Those $125,000 though will only go to the Pro who wins all 3 events, something that will be a tricky feat for sure.

According to the Rev3 website, "Professionals who compete in any of the “featured” series races will have the ability to earn points towards the series and will qualify for additional cash prizes." So that should still make it interesting for those who don't think that they can win all 3 events. The overall series top three finishers based on a point system will get an additional $10,000 for first, $4,000 for second and $2,000 for third overall.

The announcement of the additional $125,000 comes right on the heels of the Ironman Pro Membership Program of the WTC (World Triathlon Corporation.) With the new $750 program for Pros, many Pros might be inclined to race more WTC events to get their money’s worth and that certainly must be a worry for independent races and series. Plus that is certainly something that must be on the mind of Pro athletes when they lay out their 2010 race calendar.
