Ryan Barnett seriously injured

Written by: Herbert Krabel
Date: Tue May 06 2008

Blue Bicycles' Ryan Barnett was hit by a truck and landscape trailer while warming up for the Roswell Criterium on Saturday night. He apparently now has several skull fractures, broken ribs, a chipped pelvis and a compression fracture of T3, which is seemingly causing some paralysis. He is currently at the Gwinett medical center in Atlanta, GA, and it is planned to move him to the Shepherd Center at some time tomorrow. The Shepherd Center is where Saul Raisin was treated after his terrible accident in Europe. The prognosis from the doctors so far is 60/40 for his chance to be walking again. Ryan is a very nice outgoing person and is an amazingly fast talented cyclist. He works for Blue Bicycles as their marketing manager and is very passionate about his work.

We will keep you posted as we find out more.

Hitting a cyclist or pedestrian should always be assault/murder 3 out of 5 stars

I constantly see assholes text messaging or distracted by some other method on the road. It is a sick joke that we don't have laws that require people be responsible for their actions and are well aware of the penalties. Don't call them accidents, they are assaults, they are murders and these are careless selfish psychopaths committing them

Ryan - Everyone is pulling for you. 5 out of 5 stars

Atlanta cyclists have taken many many blows due to this type of automobile vs. bicycle. MS150 in 2003 S. Florida a cyclist was killed by a drunk illegal alien. Loss of limb, life, friends. Keep safe all. Say a prayer for our friend Ryan and his family.

Being a team member of the Freedom Run across America, I am at our office headquarters in Milwaukee keeping the run moving east to DC. As the guys were running today in Missouri and I was teaching a spin class in Milwaukee, we dedicated our physical efforts today for Ryan for a full and speedy recovery. Hang tough Ryan!

I had the opportunity of meeting Ryan a couple years ago in Vegas and he has worked with us for a long time. We (Glory Cycles Team) hope that he recovers fast. It is so sad hearing that an incredible athlete like him is in that situation.

Once again it seems that cyclists are the target of an attentive, distracted or otherwise intolerant motorist! How many more of us will be the target of these impatient idiots while we try to enjoy the sport we love? I am sure when we know more about this assault on cycling and cyclists it will be clear that the driver of the truck just did not care about anyone but him/herself as was the case in SC when the MS150 ride was struck and killed (coincidentally by a pick-up truck pulling a trailer) We need tougher laws and cops, prosecutors and judges that are not afraid to enforce these laws to keep cyclists safer. I am praying for Ryan as I am sure we all are and we should keep him and his family and team mates in our thoughts.
