Gomez, Haskins in Miami

Javier Gomez had a superb race in Miami, Florida and ran to the win at the 2012 Nautica South Beach Triathlon. Sarah Haskins grabbed the win in the women's race and showed that her fitness is spot on.

Dustin McLarty was first out of the water with Javier Gomez right on his heels. Francesco Godoy, another Spaniard was next out of the water, about 30 seconds behind the leaders and Cameron Dye led the artillery to the shore another 12 seconds later.

Ben Collins was one of the guys right on the heels of Dye and he rocked to a race best bike split in 51:14, about 1:15 quicker than Dye who is also well known for his bike prowess. Andrew Yoder also had a decent bike time, but he had lost a couple minutes to the leaders during the swim, and Javier Gomez showed that he can ride hard too with a 53:12 time.

Out on the run though no one near the front could touch Gomez and his 31:24 split was race best indeed. Kaleb Vanort 's 31:42 allowed him to move up to 6th position, but further up the road Collins held on to second place and Bevan Docherty ran past Dye to take third.

"I had a solid day, but against the likes of Gomez and Docherty you have to be on point start to finish, and I was just a little off in everything. I was solid out of the water but gave up 30 seconds to Gomez, and second off the bike but gave up 1 minute to Collins, and just couldn't make up the gap," said Cameron Dye to slowtwitch.

Gomez had already shown last October that the non drafting racing suits him quite well, when the fast Spaniard grabbed the win at the Toyota U.S. Open Triathlon in Dallas, Texas. Sarah Haskins on the other hand had finished second in that event to Sweden's Lisa Norden.

But this year in Miami Haskins started her day with a race best 22:05 swim, then had a quite fast 58:35 bike that was only bested by Alicia Kaye, before leaving the competition in the dust with a very fine 36:47 run. Lauren Goss managed a 36:36 tun which proved to be race best and propelled her into 4th place, but Aussie Annabel Luxford prevented an all American podium with her second place finish about 2:45 behind Haskins. Alicia Kaye rounded out the podium 38 seconds behind the Aussie.

As the Nautica South Beach Triathlon was the first event in the 2012 Race To The Toyota Cup, the series leaders are the same Pros who populated the top of the results today.
