Weekend Box Nov 10 2013

In this Weekend Box we cover the final Rev3 race of 2013, the SunSmart Ironman 70.3 Australian Championships in Mandurah, the World Bicycle Relief Mobilize Me campaign and a very sad image gallery from Mount Everest.

Andrew Starykowicz and Meredith Kessler win final Rev3 race of 2013

Despite having raced the Ironman Florida race the weekend prior, Andrew Starykowicz did not show any signs of wear and tear and stormed to the win at the 2013 Rev3 Florida in 3:47:50. Richie Cunningham and Eric Limkemann rounded out the podium. Meredith Kessler used this race as a prep event for the upcoming Ironman Arizona and showed that she is ready indeed. Her final time of 4:11:48 allowed her to take a reasonable comfortable win over Lauren Goss and Jennifer Spieldenner.

Ironman 70.3 Mandurah titles for Terenzo Bozzone and Melissa Hauschildt

The closing 1:15:52 run of Terenzo Bozzone made the difference at the 2013 Ironman 70.3 Mandurah Australian Championships and allowed this Kiwi to hold of Aussies Tim Berkel and Sam Appleton. 3:42:59 was the final time for Bozzone and he again showed that he is currently hard to beat on that distance.. Mel Hauschildt used a strong bike and run split to take the women’s title in Mandurah. Annabel Luxford and Radka Vodickova finished second and third. The win also gives Hauschildt the Australian champion crown of that distance and in the men’s race it appears that runner-up Berkel will be bestowed with that prestigious title.

Climbing Mount Everest frozen milestones

The gallery featured below is not new, but somehow had been spread with a fever pitch this weekend. Folks who have died on the mountain typically stay where they fell or their body gave up and because of the cold conditions they are very well preserved in most cases. This editor (and likely many other triathletes) has also had on his mind to climb Mount Everest and / or K2 but that desire has actually long disappeared. Not because of the images below, but the commercialization of these climb. That however is a completely different story. Still, when seeing the images below we should wonder how many of us would stop in an event if we saw someone injured on the course we are competing on. Is the end goal the most important thing? In the death zone on such mountains hanging out for someone else is often associated with a death sentence for the helper, but there have been questions if folks are more concerned to get to the top versus anything else. In a triathlon however it is likely not life or death for someone to stop and assist.
