Ben Kanute, 2016 Olympian, capped off a double-win weekend with a victory Sunday at the Columbia Threadneedle Investments Boston Triathlon, coming off a Saturday victory with the Carolina Gliders Mixed Relay Team at the Atlantic City Major League Triathlon.
As the Boston swim was canceled due to inclement weather, Kanute finished the 2 kilometer opening run, 35 kilometer bike leg and 10 kilometer run in a time of 1:29:08 which gave him a 1:35 margin of victory over Matt Alford of Coventry Rhode Island and 1:42 over 3rd place finisher Spencer Ralston of Hebron, Connecticut.
Kanute combined a duathlon style 6:53 run, a race-best 48:19 split for the 35 kilometer bike leg and second-best 32:25 split for the 10 kilometer run centered at the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation’s Carson Beach in South Boston.
Angela Naeth, a Canadian national based in Boulder, Colorado, finished in 1:43:03 to win the women’s overall title by 59 seconds over 3rd place finisher Kim Webster of Framingham , Massachusetts and 1:48 over Sonja Kent of Framingham, Massachusetts.
Naeth combined am 8:57 split for the opening 2k run, a by-far women’s-best 52:32 split for the 35 kilometer bike leg, and a women’s 3rd-fastest 39:24 10 kilometer run to edge Webster by 59 seconds. She also competed on a quick turn-around, having finished 3rd last week at Ironman UK.
About 2,000 age group athletes from 42 states and 15 countries competed Sunday in the event which began with a beach run forced when a summer storm forced cancellation of the swim leg.
