Amorelli, Oliveira take home country wins at Florianopolis

Igor Amorelli and Pamella Oliveira earned home country wins at Ironman 70.3 Florianopolis.

Amorelli flew to a big lead with a race-best 2:03:04 bike split to take the win in 3:46:47 with a 3:46 margin of victory over Tim O’Donnell of the U.S. and 5:03 over 3rd place finisher Juri Vinuto of Brazil.

Oliveira swam to a 4:05 lead on fellow Brazilian Bruna Mahn, then held off the field with a women’s 3rd-best bike split and 4th-fastest run to finish in 4:23:04 with an 11 seconds margin of victory over Mahn and 56 seconds over 3rd-place Beatriz Neres for a 1-2-3 Brazilian sweep.

Men

Bruno Joaquim of Brail led the men’s swim with a 22:44 split that gave him a 1 second lead on Luiz Francisco of Brazil, 4 seconds on O’Donnell, 24 seconds on Juri Vinuto, 31 seconds on Amorelli, 32 seconds on Fernando Toldi of Brazil, 40 seconds on Fellipe Santos of Brazil and 2:40 on Santiago Ascenco of Brazil.

After 50 kilometers of the bike leg, Amorelli opened a gap of 2 minutes on a pack of four including Toldi, O’Donnell, Francisco, and Joaquim.

After a decisive race-best bike split of 2:03:04 – 4:44 better than the next best effort by Toldi – Amorelli held a near five minute lead on Joaquim, Toldi and O’Donnell.

On the first half of the run, O’Donnell sliced Amorelli’s lead by 1:11. After 10.5km, Amorelli led O’Donnell by 4:04 and Toldi by 5:20, with Francisco and Vinuto more than six minutes arrears.

After a 4th-best 1:17:09 run, Amorelli finished in 3:46:47 with a 3:36 margin of victory on O’Donnell (1:15:28 run), 5:03 on 3rd-place Vinuto (1:12:34 run), and 6:12 on 4th-place Santiago Ascenco (race-best 1:11:27 run split).

Women

Oliveira finished the swim in 24:24 which gave her a 1:24 lead on Lauren Goss of the U.S., 3:18 on Beatriz Neres of Brazil, 4:05 on Bruna Mahn of Brazil and 4:20 on Mariana Borges of Brazil.

After 41km of the flat and fast bike leg, Oliveira held a 4 minute lead on Mahn, Goss and Neres.

After a women’s 3rd-best 2:28:55 bike split, Oliveira led the women into T2 by a 2:09 margin on Mahn (women’s-fastest 2:26:57 bike split), 2:57 on Neres (2:28:19 bike split).

Halfway through the half marathon, Oliveira led by 2:52 over Neres and Mahn, who were battling in close quarters.

After a women’s 4th-best 1:25:54 run, Oliveira finished in 4:23:04, eking out an 11 seconds margin of victory over Mahn (1:23:53 run) and 1:56 over Neres (1:23:51 run).
