Ascenco, Jahn win Punta del Este 70.3
Santiago Ascenco of Brazil and Kirsty Jahn of Canada took the elite titles at Ironman 70.3 Punta del Este in Uruguay.
Men
Ascenco finished in 3:44:33 with a 1:58 margin of victory over Matt Hanson of the U.S. and 7:46 over 3rd place Luis Henrique Ohde of Brazil.
Ohde led the swim in 25:16 which gave him a 51 seconds lead on Hanson, 53 seconds on Mario de Elia of Argentina, 55 seconds on Juan Manuel Lauro of Uruguay, and 58 seconds on Ascenco.
Ascenco led the field into T2 after a race–best bike split that gave him roughly a 4-minutes lead (his chip did not register at T2) over Ohde, who was 3 seconds ahead of Hanson.
Hanson says that the official bike splits were significantly off and his official 1:53:14 bike split was 11 minutes off the 2:04:30 recorded by his Garmin.
“I am guessing Ascenco was right around 2:00:00 for the bike split,” Hanson told Slowtwitch. De Elia was fourth into T2, 4 minutes behind Ohde and Hanson.
After a self-timed 1:15:30 run split (no mid-race chip time), Ascenco finished in 3:44:33 with a 1:58 margin over Hanson (race-best 1:13:15 run) and 7:46 ahead of 3rd-place finisher Ohde, who ran 1:19:22.
Hanson emailed Slowtwitch: “I am happy with the day overall. Feel good about my swim and thought I did what I needed to on the bike to have a chance to run for the win. Santiago had a great day and I just wasn't able to bridge the gap up to him.”
Women
Wassner sisters Laurel and Rebeccah led the swim in 26:38 and 26:39 respectively, which gave them a 1:13 lead on Jahn, 2:51 on Monticeli and 3:13 on Flo Chretien.
“My first time first out of the swim!” exulted Laurel.
After a women’s 2nd-best 2:18:57 bike split, Rebeccah Wassner led her sister by 1:02, Jahn by 2:54, and Monticeli by 5:18.
After a women’s-best 1:30:44 half marathon, Jahn passed the Wassners and finished in 4:19:14 with a 53 seconds margin on Laurel Wassner (1:33:29 run) and 1:34 on Monticeli (1:39:54 run). After a 1:36:02 run, Rebeccah Wassner finished 4th, 3:24 behind Jahn.
