Dreitz, Ryf take Mallorca 70.3

Andreas Dreitz of Germany defended his 2014 crown with a dominating bike split and Daniela Ryf of Switzerland continued her hot streak with a wire-to-wire victory at Ironman 70.3 Mallorca.

Dreitz quickly overcame a 31 seconds deficit after the swim with a smashing 2:10:14 bike split – 8 and a half minutes better than the next-best men. Then the German finished his day with a relaxed 10th-best 1:19:06 run to finish with a 2:24 margin on Patrik Nilsson of Sweden and 2:55 over 3rd-place finisher David McNamee of Great Britain.

Ryf had women's best splits in all disciplines – 23:14 swim, 2:29:31 bike split and 1:20:01 run – to finish with a 9:28 margin on Julia Gajer of Germany and 11:38 on 3rd-place finisher Yvonne Van Vlerken of Netherlands.

Ryf’s victory is just the latest prize in a remarkable string that includes a win at the 2014 Ironman 70.3 World Championship, a runner-up finish at the 2014 Ironman World Championship, and 2015 victories at Challenge Fuerteventura and Challenge Dubai.

Top contenders among a large pack of chasers included David McNamee (+22 seconds), Ivan Raña of Spain (+26s), Jan van Berkel of Switzerland (+28s), Patrick Lange of Germany (+29s), Patrik Nilsson of Sweden (+30s) and defending champion Andreas Dreitz of Germany (+31s).

Raña lagged 10:17 arrears in 11th.

With such a lead, Dreitz could cruise to the win with a 10th–best 1:19:06 run to finish in 3:56:48. Nilsson slashed through the field from 9th to the runner-up slot with a race-best 1:12:56 run, 2:24 behind the winner and McNamee utilized a 2nd-best 1:13:31 run to take the final spot on the podium, 31 seconds behind Nilsson. Artem Parienko ran a 5th-best 1:14:43 split to take 4th, 1:11 behind McNamee and Lange finished 5th, 39 seconds later. Raña posted a 3rd-best 1:13:49 run to advance from 11th to 6th.
