Engelhardt, McBride Capture Los Cabos 70.3

Adriano Engelhardt of Switzerland used his race-best bike split and second-fastest run to hold off the formidable run of up-and-coming U.S. contender Trevor Foley to win top honors at Ironman 70.3 Los Cabos. Rach McBride of Canada emerged from the water tied-for-first with Mollie Hebda of the U.S., then unleashed a women’s fastest bike split and a third-best run to finish in 4:22:36 with a 5:31 margin over Kylie Simpson and 9:09 over 3rd place finisher Mollie Hebda of the U.S.

Australia’s Kylie Simpson overcame a very slow 38:18 swim with a second-fastest bike split and a dominant half marathon to take second place. While at first glance Simpson’s super-slow swim seemed highly unlikely, a search of her top results revealed that she won the 2021 Ironman Cairns while beginning her day with a 1:09:32 swim split.

Women's Race Recap
Rach McBride of Canada and Mollie Hebda of the U.S. led the swim in 28:08 and 28:09 respectively, three minutes ahead of Alycia Hill. On the bike, McBride surged ahead extending her lead to 6:43 over Mollie Hebda.

After cooling off her pace, McBride finished in 4:22:36 with a 5:31 margin over the hard charging Kylie Simpson, making up gobs of time after her slow swim and 10:30 deficit at T2. Behind her, Hebda took third place.

Men's Race Recap
Joaquin Pereda led the men’s swim with a 24:23 split with countryman David Sanchez right on his heels. A minute back were Tomas Hernandez and Marty Andrie, with Jackson Laundry and Engelhardt 90 seconds back and Trevor Foley 4 minutes arrears.

Swiss charger Engelhardt took control on the bike, riding a 2:06:18 split on a tough course to out split nearest contender Jackson Laundry by a minute. The rest of the chase pack, including Foley, trailed Engelhardt into T2 by at least three minutes.

With a solid lead over Laundry, Engelhardt poured it on and ran aggressively, posting a race-best 1:09:49 half marathon to finish in 3:46:34 with a 2:18 margin over Foley and 4:24 over 3rd place finisher Tomas Hernandez. Falling behind, Laundry faded to 4th place, 51 seconds ahead of Rodrigo Acevedo of Colombia.
