Two Dead at World Triathlon Age Group Sprint Championships
Two age-group athletes have died at the World Triathlon Age Group Sprint World Championships.
The two athletes — one from Mexico, one from Great Britain — were racing at the event in Torremolinos-Andalucía, Spain. According to eyewitness reports, one of the athletes was pulled from the swim course, whereas the other athlete was near the finish line of the event.
World Triathlon confirmed the fatalities in a statement, which read in part, “Our deepest condolences go to their respective family, friends, National Federations and all the triathlon family. World Triathlon, the Spanish Federation and the LOC are in contact with their families and NFs to provide all the support needed in these difficult and sad times.”
Conditions at the event featured mild temperatures in the low 70s, winds below 10 miles per hour, and calm seas.
The Age Group Sprint Championships are part of a four day weekend of racing, which culminates in the World Triathlon Championship Series Grand Final on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
