Whistler, Wu take 70.3 Yeppoon
Ollie Whistler held off Matty White by 6 seconds to win the Capricorn Resort Ironman 70.3 Yeppoon in 3:56:44. Michelle Wu grabbed the women's title in 4:22:43.
Matt Bailey was first out of the water in 22:36, followed by Mark Bowstead in 22:59 and Ollie Whistler next in 23:21.
Once on the bikes, Whistler's 2:12:18 split put him into great position going into the run. Richard Thompson had the fastest bike split in 2:11:10 and reached T2 with Whistler.
The challenge for Whistler came in the form of Matty White. White cranked out a 2:16:40 run, almost 3 minutes faster than Whistler, but in the end 6 seconds shy of the title. Whistler had already taken the win in 3:56:44. Thompson finished third in 3:58:32.
Lisa Marangon swam fastest among the Pro women and reached T1 with about a minute advantage over Rachael Paxton.
Marangon held on to the lead on the bike too with a solid 2:27:08 time, but Michelle Wu had now moved herself into striking position.
Wu's best 1:25:58 half marathon was almost 10 minutes quicker than Marangon and gave her the title. Marangon held on to second place and age grouper Kristy Hallett led 2 more age groupers to fill places 3, 4 and 5.
