Long-Term Test: The Brooks Hyperion 2

Having been in the footwear game now for nearly two full decades (editor’s note: Good Lord, it’s been that long?!?!), we’ve seen a lot of swings in footwear. We’ve ridden waves, from the original generation of Nike Free to minimalism to “natural running” to maximalism to the flood of carbon plated footwear that now makes up the majority of shoe walls today. You’d be forgiven for being confused by shoes today. There’s just so much technology to now also wade through — and that’s before we start talking the forthcoming “smart” shoes with embedded power meters and other trackers.

In a way, it’s reflective of our world today; always connected, always on, always what’s next? And there are plenty of times where I turn to running to shut that connection off, to be disconnected, to think without interruption. And at that point in time, the last thing I want to be thinking about is the shoe on my foot, or the technology in it, or whether I should be running faster or slower or easier or harder or whatever metric I’m supposed to be chasing in that moment. It’s time to just shut up and run.
