Course Description
Swim: A sandy start at Falmouth’s gorgeous Surf Drive Beach. The water temperature has never been lower than 72, but never so high as to force a ban on wetsuits. The course follows the shoreline — never more than 50 yards offshore — and is carefully lifeguarded by the stars of the Town of Falmouth’s lifeguarding staff. Wave conditions over the years have ranged from glass-calm to a slight chop; never “big surf” in the protected waters of Vineyard Sound.
Bike: Your bike ride alternates between flat and moderately hilly as you work your way toward the main campus of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Ride through the scientific research complex, then follow quiet narrow roads into the village of Woods Hole. Next, a highlight of your ride will be a short climb to a coastal bluff to pass the spectacular Nobska Lighthouse. The remaining three miles are either downhill or flat to the finish.
Run: After you rack your bicycle at Surf Drive Beach, you will begin a flat run along well-paved roads past stately historic homes and quaint beach cottages — with glimpses of Falmouth Harbor and Vineyard Sound. Two aid stations (offering both water and fluid replacement drink) along the way. Motor vehicle traffic is sharply limited by the Falmouth Police, and hundreds of cheering spectators will greet you back at the finish line!
