Trio: Optical HR + Cadence
Tigra Sports has released an new sensor that monitors heart rate, but also running and cycling cadence. The Trio utilizes a proven optical heart rate sensor by PerformTek, which is the same type of sensor used in Jabra Sport Pulse Headphones and the popular Scosche RHYTHM+. The Trio also features IP68 waterproofing which is above the standard IP67 found in similar devices.
One of the advantages to the Trio compared to similar devices is that it also measures cadence, both running and cycling, thereby reducing the need for a cadence device.
The Trio transmits only via BTLE and is compatible with most iOS and Android apps including Strava, MapMyFitness, Runkeeper, and Tigra’s free iOS app, TiGRA Fit. The Trio requires another device (e.g. mobile device or watch) to display the heart rate and cadence. The Trio attaches via two Velcro straps, to either the arm or leg of user, and has a reported battery life of over eight hours.
There has been quite a shift in the industry to optical heart rate sensors with Garmin, Suunto, and Polar watches now offering an optical HR model, along with the Scosche and Mio with dedicated optical heart rate sensors, all with varying degrees of accuracy.
The Trio retails for $99, about $20 more than Scosche and Mio.
