Patagonman 2025 Recap: The Epic Day in Words and Pictures

The sixth running of Patagonman took place this weekend in the spectacular Chilean Patagonia mountains and, as usual, the race offered up lots of drama to go along with the beautiful vistas. Great Britain’s Derrett Stephen took the men’s win ahead of some big-name competition, while fellow Brit Rosie Wild took the women’s race, finishing fourth overall.

The day before the race there was a tragic accident in the Aysén fjord – a man died in a crash that caused an oil spill. The Chilean Navy was able to help with clean up, though, allowing for the swim to start the day off.

“Race day brought surprisingly calm waters and relatively warm conditions, with water temperatures ranging between 12.5°C (54.5 °F) and 15°C (59 °F) throughout the fjord — the mildest swim conditions in Patagonman history,” race organizers reported after the race.

Josh Amberger leads the way out of the water.

In the men’s race it was Aussie Josh Amberger, who had announced the Patagonman would be his last professional race, who led out of the water in a time of 49:52, ahead of Stephen and American Ian McDonough. Fourth out of the water was two-time Olympic gold medalist Alistair Brownlee.

On the bike Amberger was able to maintain his lead into T2, while Brownlee moved up to second thanks to the day’s fastest bike split (4:47) starting the run. Stephen flew through the run, though, to move to the lead, finishing ahead of Amberger and Brownlee.

Wild Dominates

There was no touching Rosie Wild, who in addition to being a pro triathlete was the first woman to pass Great Britain’s prestigious Paratrooper training program. Wild would lead from start to finish and come across the line in fourth place overall.

Things were a bit tighter for the second two spots on the podium as another Brit, Nicole Morgan got to the line just over eight-minutes ahead of American Arran Goldman.
