After winning both the Olympics and his first world championship last year, Great Britain’s Alex Yee has set his sights on some different challenges for 2025 to ensure he’ll be ready and excited for the next Olympic build as he looks ahead to the LA Games. Earlier this year that included his first marathon – he ran 2:11:08 in London in April. Today marked the Brit’s return to multisport racing and, as his competitors quickly learned, he’s not at all rusty when it comes to swim, bike and run racing.
As with the women’s event, today’s race featured an “Eliminator” format that included three races of 300 m swim, 4 km bike and a 1 km run, with the final race featuring two loops of the run course. The last two in the first two heats were eliminated, and there was six minutes between each heat.

Marcus Day put the Brownlee team in good stead by taking the short chute.

The rest of the field found themselves chasing Dey …

… Including his teammate Jonny Brownlee, who exited the water 10 seconds back, then “made every mistake in the book” as he found himself desperately trying to avoid being eliminated after the first race.

Stars and Stripes’ Csongor Lehmann would take the first heat ahead of Yee and Crown Racing’s Vasco Vilaca.

Brownlee could never get himself back in the mix and would be eliminated after the first race.

The second race begins with 14 men diving into Lake Ontario …

… Then running up the stairs to get to the transition.

Vilaca and Yee were the aggressors during the second race’s bike leg …

… Then Yee blitzed through the transition to lead the way onto the run.

Stars and Stripes athletes Chase McQueen and …

Reese Vannerson would be eliminated after the second race, which was won by Yee with Vilaca close behind.

So how is this for unfair … Yee not only got to lead the way into the water for the final race (two seconds ahead of Vilaca), but he also got to use the short chute, as did Lehmann. Vilaca had to run the longer way around, losing some valuable seconds.

Yee would build on his short chute advantage over the final loop to pull clear of the rest of the men.

And was very happy to return to triathlon in winning form.

Lehmann would hang tough for second …

With Vilaca rounding out the podium spots.

Charles Paquet would be the first of the Canadian men across the line …

With three-time Olympian Tyler Mislawchuk edging out up and coming star Mathis Beaulieu.
