Age Groupers in Marbella: Triathlon Vet Will Newbery Makes His 70.3 Worlds Debut On a Special Edition Argon 18 E-119

More than 6,000 people are set to tackle the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Marbella, Spain, this weekend, and many of these athletes will be competing at the worlds for the first time. With multiple appearances in Kona, races at the World Triathlon age-group world championships and more than 20 years of competing in the sport, Great Britain’s Will Newbery is far from a triathlon newbie. Despite all that experience, though, Newbery will be toeing the start line in Marbella as a first-timer at the 70.3 worlds. Like everyone else in the field, he will be looking to chase his limits on the weekend, all the while focusing on taking in the fun of racing at yet another world championship event.

Racing Marbella

Newbery got into triathlon in the early 2000s. He had been a field hockey player in his youth, but after taking “a ski season” one winter and coming home “a little bit heavier and a bit unhealthy,” he started training for a marathon. Around that same time, he got certified as a personal trainer. After becoming an avid runner, a boss of his encouraged him to try triathlon, but there was one problem: “I’d never swam.”

Newbery says he surfed growing up, so he was competent in the water, but swimming lap after lap after lap in a pool was completely foreign to him. His boss taught him how to swim in a 10-metre pool, loaned him his bike and pushed him into his first triathlon.

As is the case with so many triathletes, the rest is history, and more than two decades later, Newbery’s life revolves around triathlon. He transitioned from personal training to coaching a few years after getting into the sport and has raced 15 IRONMANs and even more 70.3s. His family competes (his nephew will be racing alongside him in Marbella, and his son is also an avid triathlete). Suffice it to say that triathlon changed his world completely.

“I love it,” Newbery says. “I’m lucky, you know, my hobby is my job.”

He runs his own coaching business and triathlon club — 9 Endurance Coaching in the New Forest, a rural region in southern England. He coaches anywhere from 30 to 35 athletes at any time, eight of whom also travelled to Marbella to race this weekend.

When asked what advice he has given his athletes (and what he would tell any other world champs first-timers racing in Spain), Newbery says something that he has reminded himself this week, too.

“Just take in the atmosphere and enjoy it,” he says. “It’s like a culmination of everything that they’ve worked for, isn’t it? They put the work in, they sacrificed so much. Might as well enjoy it. It’s a hobby, isn’t it?”

A Special Edition Argon 18

Newbery says he doesn’t expect to win his age group or have a standout performance in Marbella, but he will be one of one when it comes to the bike he’ll be riding. He has a brand new ride (not just for him, but for everyone) from Argon 18 — the latest E-119 Tri+ Disc build. He won the bike in a joint contest from Argon 18, Parcours Wheels and Classified Cycling, and news of the new build was only released in the past few days.

The contest was specifically for athletes who would be racing in Marbella, as the team at Argon 18 had plans to release it this week. Newbery says he has been a long-time supporter of the brand, so he is thrilled to have the opportunity to not only get a brand new bike, but to debut it on the world stage. The specs for his sleek and cool new ride are below.
