It started as a protest attempting to make fun of and shame Euros who wore their bun hugging Speedos into local Kona shops on the week of the Kona Ironman. Now, the protest and the attempted cure is worse than the disease and any attempt to initiate respect for local sensibilities is gone with the winds of modern shamelessness.

The Underpants Run, as organized by Paul Huddle and Roch Frey, for better or worse, has simply made Underwear as Formal Wear the fashion statement on the Big Island.
