Terenzo Bozzone of New Zealand and Linsey Corbin of the U.S. won the overall titles at Ironman 70.3 Mt. Tremblant Sunday.
Bozzone won it on the run, passing bike leader Romain Guillaume in the first part of the half marathon and then taking over from Brent McMahon in the final miles. Bozzone’s 2nd-best 1:14:34 run brought him to the finish in 3:53:12 with a 45 seconds margin of victory over McMahon and 2:46 on 3rd-place finisher Guillaume.
Corbin was a few seconds on the swim short of a wire-to-wire victory over runner-up Magali Tisseyre. Corbin combined a 2nd-fastest 27:24 swim, a race-best bike split and a 2nd-best run to finish in 4:26:05.
Men
Brent McMahon led the swim in 24:19, followed closely by Bozzone (24:21), Tom Davison of New Zealand (24:25), Martin Jensen of Denmark (24:26), Sean Bechtel of Canada (24:29), and Roman Guillaume of France (24:31). Trailing by 45 seconds were three potential contenders – 2006 ITU Duathlon World Champion Leon Griffin, Canadian Trevor Wurtele and Chris Bagg of the U.S.
After a race-fastest bike split of 2:09:49, Guillaume led Bozzone by 56 seconds, McMahon by 57 seconds, Davison by a minute and Bechtel by 1:09. Gapped by the lead chasers, Jensen (-3:37) Wurtele (-6:01) Griffin (-10:23) and Bagg (-10:26) had perhaps too much ground to make up.
On the run, Bozzone took care of business with a 2nd-fastest 1:14:34 run to finish in 3:53:12 for the win. McMahon, who took over from Guillaume in the first few miles, surrendered the lead to Bozzone in the second half of the run, his 3rd-best 1:15:22 half marathon bringing him home the runner-up, 45 seconds arrears of Bozzone. Guillaume fell to 3rd with a 9th-best 1:18:15 run that left him 2:01 back of McMahon at the finish. Wurtele gave it his best shot with a race-fastest 1:13:52 run but fell 1:37 short of the podium with his 3:57:35 4th place finish.
Women
Tisseyre led the swim in 27:22, trailed two seconds later by Corbin, followed by Amber Ferreira (-10 seconds), McQuaid (-1:47) and Christine Fletcher (-2:16).
Corbin put the race away with a race-fastest 2:27:23 bike split that was 2:37 better than Tisseyre, 3:56 better than McQuaid and 10:15 better than Ferreira.
Corbin added to her lead with a 2nd-best 1:26:56 run that was 1:31 better than Tisseyre, 4:45 better than McQuaid, 1:39 better than Ferreira and surrendered 26 seconds to the race-best 1:26:30 half marathon of Canadian Annie Gervais.
At the finish, Corbin’s 4:26:05 was 3:42 better than runner-up Tisseyre, 10:08 quicker than 3rd-place Melanie McQuaid, Canada’s 3-time XTERRA World Champion. Ferreira finished 4th, 12:31 back and Gervais was 1:15 further back in 5th place.
