Cave, Fleischmann prevail at Pacific Grove

Brian Fleischmann won wire-to-wire and Leanda Cave did the same to win the elite titles Saturday at the Triathlon at Pacific Grove in California.

Fleischmann combined a race-best 19:59 swim in the cold, kelp-filled waters, a 1:00:50 multiple loop bike though the charming streets of Pacific Grove and a superior 32:36 10k run to top the results in 1:55:02 for a 1:44 margin of victory over runner-up Kyle Leto of Walnut Creek, California.

Cave, seven years after her 2002 ITU Olympic distance World Championship, ignored the ITU hubbub 5,000 mile away in Australia to dominate matters in Pacific Grove. Cave, now aimed squarely at the Ironman and Ironman 70.3 distance, enjoyed Terry Davis’ Monterey area hit out with a 2 minutes 2 seconds margin of victory over Tenille Hoogland of Ottawa Canada. Cave combined a 23:52 swim, 1:05:51 bike and a 38:25 run for a 2:10:00 finish.
