Ben Kanute of the University of Arizona won the USA Triathlon Collegiate National Championship Olympic distance, non-drafting men’s individual race.

Kanute, who won yesterday’s USA Triathlon National Collegiate Championship inaugural draft-legal, sprint distance men’s race, was first across the line in 1:46:36. Michael Pool of the University of South Florida was 2nd in 1:47:08 and Alex Libin of the University of Iowa, who posted the day’s fastest run of 33:29, was 3rd in 1:47:13.

Kanute emerged from the swim in a lead pack of five that included William Jones (Colorado), Davide Giardini (Colorado), Andrew Roos (Stanford and Chris Braden (Colorado). At the end of the 40 kilometer bike leg, Kanute and Jones surged to a small lead. Kanute then took control on the run and won by a margin of 32 seconds over runner-up Pool and 39 seconds over 3rd-place Libin.

"Everything felt really solid," Kanute told USA Triathlon media. "It was just a matter of following my pace on the run and going hard to the finish. I wanted to get out to an early lead and try and hold that as long as possible. I knew once I got to the far turnaround [on the run] and crossed the bridge, it was home free from there."
