Lester, Chivot win ITU AG Worlds

Arnaud Chivot of France took the men’s overall title and Carrie Lester of Australia took the women’s overall win at the ITU age group world championship at Surfer’s Paradise on the Gold Coast of Australia Saturday.

Chivot outran fellow men’s 20-24 competitor and overall runner-up Brent Schuster of Australia by 34:07 to 34:18 to fortify his lead off the bike and hit the line in 1:53:26 for an 18-seconds margin of victory.

Lester won the women’s overall title on the swim (22:12 to 23:47) and bike (1:01:06 to 1:01:49), which gave her enough breathing room to surrender 77 seconds on the run (40:37 to 39:20) and still hit the line in 2:06:16 with a 54 seconds margin of victory over fellow Australian and women’s 25-29 competitor Rachael Paxton.

Australia won the age group medals contest with 27 – 10 gold, 8 silver and 9 bronze while the U.S. led by its masters competitors, was second with 20 total – 8 gold, 5 silver and 7 bronze.

But when the USA’s 9 physically challenged medals and Australia’s 1 physically challenged medal were added, the US topped Australia 29-28 in total medals.
