Middaugh, Garrard win Winter nationals

Josiah Middaugh of Vail, Colorado and Emma Garrard of Park City, Utah won the USA Triathlon Winter Triathlon National Championship overall titles at the 2002 Winter Olympics cross country ski venue at Soldier Hollow in Midway, Utah Sunday.

Middaugh posted a time of 56 minutes, 31 seconds to top runner-up Brian Smith of Gunnison, Colorado by 45 seconds on the 5 kilometer run, 10 kilometer mountain bike and 8 kilometer cross country ski course. Australian Ben Sim took 3rd in 58:38 with top adventure racer and winter triathlon veteran Mike Kloser 4th in 1:00:31.

Middaugh seized an 8-second margin on Smith in the run and increased his margin to over a minute on the bike. Smith made up some time on the cross country ski leg, but finished 45 seconds back.

Garrard posted a time of 1:07:48 to top women’s overall runner-up Heather Best of Fairbanks, Alaska by 2:27, with Paula Hudson of Park City, Utah third in 1:12:24.

Garrard, who finished 7th at last year’s ITU Winter Triathlon World Championship and who teamed with Best and Rebecca Dussault to win the ITU Elite Winter Triathlon World Team Championship, held a 6-second lead after the run, fell to 2nd on the bike, then took charge with a race-best 24:24 final cross country ski leg.

Middaugh and Garrard earned spots on the US team for the 2011 ITU Elite Winter Triathlon Championship to be held March 26-27 in Jamijarvi, Finland.
