Nils Frommhold's proto Canyon

German Nils Frommhold earned the top of the podium at Challenge Roth with a solid day and a superb 4:09:30 bike split. A week earlier fellow German and Olympic champion Jan Frodeno captured the Ironman European Championships in Frankfurt also on one of these elusive white prototypes, but for now let's look closer at what Nils Frommhold rode to victory in Roth.

While Nils Frommhold received his award for winning the 2015 Datev Challenge Roth we were able to snap pictures of the winning bike.

The integrated bento box and the aero liquid storage element up front still show signs of yesterday's hard ride.

A Garmin mount is attached to the liquid storage.

The side view shows the integration of all of these options.

Frommhold rides Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 components but the most trick item up front are the Ergon grips on the extensions. Note also that the extensions feature different elevations.

The grips on the base bars are also by Ergon, but unlike the ones on the extensions these appear to be Canyon dedicated.

The front view shows the slippery profile and also how the extensions are at a different height to allow Frommhold to get his hands closer together.

The prototype's fork matches the bike and the brakes are hidden behind the cover.

The seat cluster area has a hidden compartment where Frommhold stashed spare tubes and CO2 cartridges.

An aero bottle on the downtube to keep things simple and clean.

Below the Ergon saddle sits an integrated bottle cage mount. Frommhold also must have saved his VonDrais number plate holder from last year's race.

At first glance the cage looks like just another bottle storage, but this taped XLab cage is angled towards the drive side. Word has it that this helps him get to the bottle easier and with less drag.

Frommhold rides 175mm Rotor 3D cranks with a Power2Max power meter and a 54 tooth Rotor round ring. Chain is a CeramicSpeed UFO.

Frommhold went to the wind tunnel with Canyon earlier this year and he sounded very happy with his relationship with the brand. Canyon and Frommhold will continue to work on this bike, so we miay see an even more refined version in Kona.
